The Supreme Court has issued a notice while hearing the contempt petition against the bulldozer action in Sonapur, Assam. Now the next hearing in this case will be held after 3 weeks. The court has asked to maintain status quo for now.

The Assam government has taken bulldozer action, calling it illegal encroachment on tribal land. After which 48 petitioners including Farooq Ahmed filed a petition in the court calling it a violation of the Supreme Court order. On September 17, the Supreme Court had ordered to stop bulldozing operations across the country till October 1.

The Supreme Court gave this order on September 17

While hearing the petition of Jamiat on 17 September 2024, the Supreme Court banned bulldozer action in cases other than illegal construction. The court made it clear that this order will not apply to illegal construction on roads, footpaths or railway lines. The Supreme Court said that after listening to all the parties, it will make guidelines to be implemented across the country regarding bulldozer action.

Bulldozers will not move without our permission

Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K.V. Vishwanathan passed the order on a plea against the action taken by various state governments to demolish buildings of accused persons as a punitive measure. The Supreme Court ordered that 'no bulldozer action will be taken anywhere in the country without our permission till October 1.'

In the petition filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of petitioner Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, it has been said that bulldozer action is being taken by targeting Muslims in BJP ruled states. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected to the Supreme Court order and said that 'the hands of the officers cannot be tied in this way.'
