Paris, August 5 (HS). Noah Lyles of the United States of America (USA) won the gold medal in the men's 100m race final late Sunday night at the ongoing Paris Olympics.
Liles needed to do something special in the biggest race of his career. He took advantage of his peak and performed his best in front of a packed crowd at the Stade de France.
Noah won the gold medal in 9.784 seconds. He was just 0.16 seconds away from breaking the Olympic record of 9.63 seconds set by the great Usain Bolt.
Jamaica's Kishan Thompson settled for silver after finishing a fraction of a second behind in one of the closest 100m races in Summer Games history. Noah's compatriot Fred Kerley took bronze in a season's best time of 9.81 seconds.
With his win, Noah became the first American athlete to win a gold medal since Justin Gatlin topped the podium in the 100m race in 2004. The athletes had to wait for some time for the results as there was a very narrow margin for the gold medal among all eight runners who took part in the event.
In the end, it was announced that Noah was 0.005 seconds ahead of Kishan to reach the top of the podium. After the announcement, the crowd burst into loud applause and applauded the American sprinter for his remarkable win. They ripped his name off his shirt and waved it in the air.
South Africa's Akane Simbine once again missed out on a podium finish as he finished fourth. At the Tokyo and Rio Olympics, Simbine was close but fell short of winning an Olympic medal in the event.
Noah won the 100m and 200m races at the World Championships last year. After winning gold in the 100m, he will try to win his second gold in the 200m race event in Paris.
