While today’s era revolves around 5G internet, digital wallets, social media appearances and online publicity, there are some unsung angels present in our society who are writing the biggest story of humanity without any noise. One such simple Gramin Dak Sevak (Postmaster) has shown that form of humanity which has brought tears to the eyes of millions of people. Neither do they have any expensive smartphone in their hands, nor do they know how to use Google Pay, PhonePe or any UPI app. When this ordinary employee, who still had an old keypad phone in his pocket, saw a two-year-old innocent girl from a poor family hanging between life and death, without wasting a moment he dedicated his entire hard-earned monthly salary for the treatment of that girl. This selfless step has proved that humanity is not dependent on any bank balance or digital technology, real richness lies in the heart.
This whole matter is related to a very emotional and heart-wrenching struggle. The two-year-old innocent daughter of a very poor daily wage laborer living in the village was suffering from a serious and rare fatal disease. After examination, the doctors told that the infection spread in the lungs and nervous system of the girl is increasing rapidly and if within the next few weeks, she is admitted to a high level multi-specialty hospital and a course of expensive medicines and injections is not started, then it will be impossible to save the life of the innocent child. The initial cost of treatment itself was estimated in lakhs. The laborer father even mortgaged his hut, goats and his wife’s small silver jewellery, but still the amount raised was proving inadequate for the hospital expenses. Sitting in the corridor of the hospital, the entire family was unable to shed anything except tears for their beloved.
When the girl’s mother reached the village sub-post office to deposit the money order or medical account of some old and crumpled currency notes received by borrowing from relatives, the postmaster sitting at the counter sensed the helplessness on the woman’s face and the tears flowing from her eyes. When asked, when the mother showed the girl’s medical reports and hospital prescriptions, the postmaster’s heart shuddered. The postmaster himself comes from a very humble background, runs a family on a limited salary and has no ancestral wealth. But the tearful cry of a mother standing in front of him shook the man within him. He took a historic and courageous decision without immediately consulting the local postal officials and his family.
Without any hesitation, the postmaster, on the same day, wrote a check of his entire month’s salary directly to the hospital where the girl was to be treated. When other post office colleagues and local villagers asked him how he would manage his household ration and personal expenses for the entire month, his simple and smiling answer made everyone bow their heads in respect. The postmaster said, “We will survive for a month by eating only dry bread and pulses, the family will manage the expenses with a little help. My salary will be credited to our account again next month, but if that two-year-old flower-like girl loses her breath, then no amount of money in the world will be able to bring her back.” This one sentence stunned everyone present there.
Although the good postmaster did this act in complete silence and did not want it to be publicized, when a young doctor at the hospital heard that an elderly postal worker who operated a simple keypad phone had donated his entire salary to this innocent child, he shared this inspiring incident on social media. Within no time this news spread like wildfire throughout the area and on the internet. Inspired by this incredible sacrifice of the postmaster, hundreds of people sitting in Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai and even abroad started sending donations directly to the girl’s medical relief fund. The spark of that one salary of the postmaster created such a mass movement that the funds for the entire treatment of the girl were collected within just 48 hours and the innocent child could get timely treatment.
In today’s materialistic era, where people break relationships with their loved ones for a few rupees, sacrificing one’s hard-earned money for an unknown girl makes one realize that goodness is still alive in the world. That postmaster may not have a credit card, a luxurious car or expensive gadgets, but this one step of his has made him bigger than any billionaire in the eyes of the society. Local administration and social organizations have also decided to honor this brave and sensitive employee of the Postal Department. This story is a mirror for every person who thinks that it is necessary to be very rich to help others; In fact, all it takes to help is a kind and sensitive heart.
