The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made a major amendment in the rules for students with disabilities (PWD) taking admission in MBBS courses. Till now, during admission in medical colleges, only the benchmark disability i.e. the fixed percentage of disability was considered the main criterion. But now under the new and modern guidelines, it has been decided that only the paper disability percentage will not be considered, but it will be tested whether the concerned student has the real functional capacity to become a doctor and treat patients in the hospital or not.

The main objective of these new guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission is to ensure that after completing difficult and challenging medical studies, when a student becomes a doctor, he can perform his responsibilities in the emergency, surgery and wards of the hospital without any physical hindrance. Keeping this practical aspect in mind, now more powers have been given to selected Disability Assessment Centers across the country which will evaluate the performance of the student through scientific methods.

After this new decision of NMC came to light, a debate has erupted among medical students, parents and doctors across the country. On one hand, many experts believe that the medical profession is directly related to human life, hence the safety of patients and the operational efficiency of the doctor should not be compromised in any way. However, the Commission has also clarified that students using modern technologies and prosthetics will be given full relief if they prove their functionality.

The medical boards formed during counseling will now examine the physical fitness and aptitude of the students in more depth.
