Mumbai: A Thane court has sentenced nine people to a maximum of two years in jail for attacking medical staff and damaging property at a government hospital.
Additional Sessions Judge A. N. Sirsikar said that dissatisfied with the treatment of the deceased relative, the accused attacked the medical staff and damaged hospital property.
According to the details of the case given by the medical officer, the incident took place on July 20, 2013 in which the patient was brought dead to Thane Civil Hospital.
The government lawyer told the court that after the patient was declared dead, his family accused the doctor of not providing timely treatment.
Cote said the role of government workers in maintaining emergency services is vital and medical professionals should be allowed to perform their duties without intimidation or threat of violence. Government employees are servants of the society and need social security to give them moral strength to perform their duties. The public should ensure that medical officers can perform their duties without any fear.
The court has convicted nine accused, residents of Mumbra, and sentenced them to imprisonment of up to two years under various sections. A fine of Rs 10,000 has also been imposed. One accused in the case was acquitted due to lack of evidence while the other accused died during the case.
