Mumbai: A gas leak from an LPG cylinder led to an explosion and a fire broke out in a house in Chembur on Thursday morning, which broke the wall of the house and damaged the shop next to it. Glass of many vehicles parked here broke. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. With the help of the fire brigade, the fire was extinguished and the debris was removed.
The incident took place at 7.30 am today behind the Smack Hill salon near Golf Club on CG Girwani Road in Chembur. The police have taken cognizance of the matter and are investigating further.
The Limbajia family lives in a ground plus one-storey house here. Gas was leaking from the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder in the house. This morning, when a woman from the family went to turn on the gas stove, there was a sudden loud explosion and a fire broke out.
Due to the explosion, the wall of the house collapsed and the roof of the adjacent house also collapsed. Apart from this, the glass panes of the vehicles parked nearby were broken.
As the fire spread, Jyotsna Limbajia (aged 53), Piyush Limbajia (aged 25), Nitin Limbajia (aged 55), and Preeti Limbajia (aged 34) sustained severe burn injuries. Nine-year-old Om Limbajia, Ajay Limbajia (aged 33), Poonam Limbajia (aged 33), and Mehak Limbajia (UW11) sustained minor injuries.
Apart from this, Sudam Shirsat (age 55 years), who was standing outside the house, suffered head and leg injuries and with the help of local people, everyone was admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The fire brigade brought the fire under control. The fire also damaged electrical wiring, wooden furniture and an adjacent shop.
People came out of their houses after the blast. They informed the police about the incident.
