NIA raids Punjab: A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided the house of a woman farmer leader and three lawyers at around 5 am on Friday. The raid was conducted at the house of woman farmer leader Sukhwinder Kaur in Sarabha Nagar, Rampura Phul, Bathinda. She is the state general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Union Krantikari and was involved in the farmers' agitation at Shambhu border when the raid took place.
The NIA team searched every corner of the house for about six hours and seized some documents, literary material, Sukhwinder's husband Harbhinder Jalal's mobile phone and some pen drives. Meanwhile, the team also questioned the people present in the house. Angry farmers protested against the raid, due to which the NIA team remained locked in the farmer leader's house for two hours.
According to the information, the NIA team reached Sukhwinder Kaur's house with a search warrant in an old case. Her husband Harbhinder Jalal, elderly mother-in-law and others were present in the house. No outsider was allowed to enter the house. The team conducted a thorough search of the house.
It is being told that Sukhwinder's husband Harbhinder Jalal writes leftist literature as he is associated with the leftist movement. In the year 2011, a case was registered against him under UAPA. The NIA has also seized some material related to literature during the raid.
As soon as the news of the raid on Sukhwinder Singh's house was received, people under the leadership of Kisan Union's district president Purushottam Mehraj reached outside his house and started raising slogans against the raid. They surrounded the house and sat on a dharna. Mehraj accused the central and state governments of unnecessarily harassing those who raise their voice.
Seeing the situation worsening, the NIA team informed the local police. SP Narendra Singh reached the spot with his team and pacified the farmers citing legal action. After about two hours of detention, the NIA team was helped to get out at around 11 pm. The team took some important documents with them.
Proceedings in a case of Lucknow
After the NIA team left, Harbhinder Jalal said that after a case came to light in Lucknow, the NIA raided his house on the basis of a search warrant from the court. Harbhinder said that he was acquitted in the case registered against him in 2011 and he is on bail in the case of possession of arms. Now the government wants to suppress the farmers and other movements by implicating them in another case.
Raids were also conducted on the houses of three lawyers
Along with farmer Ugu, the NIA raided five different locations of three lawyers in Bathinda city, Patiala, Rajpura, Mohali and Ludhiana in Punjab. The NIA has recovered some foreign documents from here, which will be investigated and further action will be taken. At present, the NIA has taken the material recovered during the raid with itself for investigation.
