NHRC notice on Foxconn not employing married women

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance and issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government following widespread complaints that Foxconn, which owns Apple's iPhone plant in India and manufactures Apple's iPhones, is not hiring married women and is discriminating against women.

NHRC has said that if this is true and women are being discriminated against in employment, then this is a very serious issue. It violates the right to equality and equal opportunity. NHRC has issued a notice to the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Chief Secretary of the Tamil Nadu government on this issue and has sought a reply within a week. The Center also took note of media reports that Foxconn India is not hiring married women in its Apple iPhone plant and has sought a report from the Labor Department of the Tamil Nadu government.

Everyone has the right to gender equality in the Indian constitution

NHRC said that the Constitution has given the right to sexual equality to all. There is no discrimination between men and women here. According to the international agreement, discrimination against women in employment is also a breach of contract. It is the duty of all state governments to ensure strict compliance of labor laws by all companies and protect the health and dignity of all persons including women. This should be respected by respecting the rights of all employees working in the supply chain of production units in the private sector.
