NHAI’s new initiative to prevent accidents caused by animals, shelters will be built on the side of the highway

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to launch a pilot project to prevent accidents caused by animals on national highways. This initiative will help in solving the problems related to stray animals along with providing a safe environment on the highways. Under this project, shelters will be built for animals, where they will be taken care of and also treated in case of accidents.

Increasing accidents caused by animals

Accidents caused by animals are increasing on highways and expressways. Although measures such as fencing have been effective to some extent, lack of monitoring and the low height of fences have made these solutions insufficient. To improve the situation, a plan has been made to set up shelters at places like Rohana section of Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border, Kharkhoda, Hansi Bypass, and Kiratpur-Nerchowk.

Shelter Home Facilities

NHAI has signed agreements with highway construction companies. NHAI will provide the land and the responsibility of construction will be on the contractor. These shelter homes will have first aid, fodder, water, and care facilities. Additionally, ambulance service will also be provided within a radius of 50 kilometers from the veterinary hospital.

NHAI’s approach

NHAI Chairman Santosh Yadav described the initiative as an important step towards creating a safe highway network. He said that this effort will not only ensure the safety of the drivers but will also show sensitivity towards the animals suffering due to accidents.
