NHAI’s big decision: Digital local pass facility started at 121 toll plazas, now monthly pass will be available sitting at home

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has given a big relief to the local vehicle owners who regularly commute on the national highways. Expanding the scope of the ‘Digital Local Monthly Pass’ facility, which was launched for non-commercial private vehicle drivers living within a radius of 20 kilometers of the toll plaza, it has now been implemented at 121 toll plazas across the country. The main objective of this step taken under the Digital India Vision of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is to make the entire process transparent, contactless and quick by eliminating the hassle of paper verification and queues at toll plazas.

Major benefits of Digital Local Pass facility

  • Online application sitting at home: Now local residents do not need to go to the toll plaza office and stand in line to get the pass made or renewed.

  • Discounted Monthly Rate: Eligible non-commercial vehicles residing within a prescribed 20 km radius as per toll rules enjoy unlimited travel at a very affordable monthly fee.

  • Direct Linkage to FASTag: Once the pass is issued, it gets linked to the active FASTag installed on the vehicle, thereby automatically applying the concessional rate while passing through the toll lane.

  • Quick Approval & Renewal: Since the verification process is completed through digital medium, the application is processed in a very short time and renewal for the next month is also possible in a single click.

Step by step process to make online digital pass

Local vehicle owners can apply for the pass in just a few minutes through their mobile or computer:

  1. Go to portal or app: Visit the official ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app of NHAI or the official web portal of IHMCL.

  2. Selection of toll plaza: Select the respective state and the specific toll plaza within 20 km of which your residence is located.

  3. Enter vehicle and Fastag details: Enter your vehicle registration number (RC Number) and active FASTag ID/bank details linked to the vehicle.

  4. Upload Documents: Upload valid digital copy of residence certificate (like electricity bill, voter ID, or ration card) and vehicle registration certificate (RC). Keep in mind that the address recorded in RC and the address of residence proof should be the same.

  5. Verification and Online Payment: Pay the prescribed monthly fee online (through UPI, Net Banking or Debit Card) after instant digital verification of documents by the system. The digital pass will be activated once the payment is successful.

Eligibility and Essential Rules

  • This concessional pass is valid only for private (white number plates) and non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps or vans.

  • Commercial vehicles (yellow number plates), taxis or vehicles used in commercial activities will not get the benefit of this scheme.

  • It is mandatory for the vehicle to be registered and the residence proof of the owner within the prescribed geographical radius of the toll plaza (usually 20 kilometres).

  • The vehicle must have a valid and blacklist-free (active) FASTag.

Ease and transparency in traffic

Extension of the digital pass system to 121 toll plazas will completely prevent disputes between local residents and toll employees. Digital tracking in place of manual slips and physical passes will reduce the problem of traffic jams at toll plazas and save time and fuel for passengers.
