NHAI rejects reports of toll tax waiver during Mahakumbh 2025

Recently, a news came out regarding the Mahakumbh 2025 to be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh that the Yogi government has announced to waive toll tax for 45 days. After this news, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has given its reaction. NHAI has clarified that no proposal regarding toll tax waiver is under consideration.

NHAI official statement

NHAI on its official X (formerly Twitter) account denied the news. He said:

“There are reports in the media that vehicles going to Prayagraj during Mahakumbh will be exempted from toll tax on national highways. We wish to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration of NHAI.”

NHAI stressed that at present no decision has been taken on toll tax waiver for Mahakumbh 2025.

What was claimed in the news?

Some media reports had claimed that the Yogi Adityanath government has decided to make 7 major toll plazas of the state toll-free during the Mahakumbh. According to these reports, these toll plazas are located in different districts and thousands of vehicles pass through them daily.

It was claimed that:

  • Vehicles passing through these routes will not have to pay any fee for 45 days.
  • NHAI is preparing to implement this decision.

Which 7 toll plazas were mentioned?

Reports said that the following 7 toll plazas will be made toll-free:

  1. Handia Toll Plaza – Varanasi Road
  2. Andhiyari Toll Plaza – Lucknow Highway
  3. Umapur Toll Plaza – Chitrakoot Road
  4. Gane Toll Plaza – Rewa Highway
  5. Mungeri Toll Plaza – Mirzapur Road
  6. Mauaima Toll Plaza – Ayodhya Highway
  7. Kokhraj Toll Plaza – Kanpur Road

It was also said in these reports that only private vehicles will be exempted from toll tax.

NHAI clarified

However, after the statement by NHAI it has become clear that:

  • No such proposal is under consideration.
  • The news of toll tax waiver during Mahakumbh is wrong.
