New warship 'Triput' launched for Navy, will become part of the fleet in 2026

New Delhi, 24 July (HS). The new warship for the Indian Navy has been launched by Rita Sreedharan, wife of Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai, in keeping with the maritime tradition with the invocation of the Atharvaveda. The ship has been named Triput, after the powerful arrow. It will join the Navy in the year 2026, which will greatly strengthen the Indian Navy's ability to maintain peace, stability and security in the Indian Ocean region in the years to come.

This ship built at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is the first of two advanced frigates. This is the 9th warship of Talwar class frigate, built by Goa Shipyard Limited. Its construction work started on 29 January 2021. Now after its launch, many types of trials will be conducted and it will be included in the Indian Navy's war fleet in October 2026. After this, Goa Shipyard is building another warship of the same class, whose name is not yet decided. This ship will join the Navy in 2027.

The contract for building two Triput class advanced frigates was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Goa Shipyard Limited on January 25, 2019. It has been designed for combat operations against enemy ships, submarines and aircraft. The Triput class ships are 124.8 meters long and 15.2 meters wide, with a draft of 4.5 meters. If they are driven at a speed of 26 kilometers per hour, they cover a range of 4850 km in one go. If driven at a speed of 56 kilometers per hour, they will go up to a range of 2600 km. These warships can move at a maximum speed of 59 kilometers per hour with a weight of about 3600 tons.

Talwar class ships are equipped with stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors and platform management systems. These ships can carry 180 soldiers including 18 officers and can stay at sea for 30 days and after that it needs to be refueled and loaded with supplies. These warships are equipped with electronic warfare systems. Medium range missiles, 8 Igla-1E, 8 vertical launch anti-ship missile club, 8 vertical launch anti-ship and land attack Brahmos missiles are also deployed on them. It has a 100 mm naval gun and a 76 mm Oto Melara naval gun. Apart from these, there are two 533 mm torpedo tubes. A rocket launcher has also been deployed. This warship can be equipped with a Kamov-28 or a Kamov-31 or Dhruv helicopter.

Navy Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan says that this is a very important day for the Indian Navy, as we are launching Yard 1258, the first of the Triput class ships. They have been built at Goa Shipyard Limited. This is the first ship built in India. This will greatly strengthen the Indian Navy's ability to maintain peace, stability and security in the Indian Ocean region in the years to come.
