New Telecom Law: New telecom laws will come into force in the country from Wednesday, June 26. The new Telecom Act 2023 will replace the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and the Indian Wireless Telegraph Act 1933. The new telecom law has been introduced in view of the continuous technological changes in the field of telecommunications. The new Act was approved by both the Houses in December last year and the President also signed the Act in the same month. Now it is being implemented.
According to the official gazette notification, sections 1,2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 46, 47, 50 to 58, 61,62 of the new act will come into force from Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Spectrum auction and allocation, settlement of cases related to violations of certain rules and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act 1997 will come into force from Wednesday i.e. today.
The new telecom rules make rules for the authority's control over telecom services during emergencies. The government will be able to use this system to establish security, maintain law and order and prevent crimes. The notification states that telecommunications is an important medium to empower the common people, however its misuse can harm people. This Act will take necessary steps to provide security to the common people.
According to the new law, government approval will be required to establish, operate and provide telecommunication services. According to the notification, the Act also aims to promote research and development in the telecommunication sector. Which will provide services to people living in remote areas and help in development related to telecommunication services, technology, products, pilot projects.
