Seoul: A study has shown that obese children are more likely to develop immune-related skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata. The study has been published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The research used data from 2161900 Korean children from 2009 to 2020. It has been found that weight control can help reduce certain skin diseases. The aim of this research was to know whether obesity is related to the development of immune mediated skin disorders (IMAD).
Previous studies have found a link between childhood obesity and IMSD. However, most of these studies used data from only a single time period. The study was conducted by the Department of Dermatology, Seoul National University College of Medicine in Korea. Seong Rae Kim, associated with it, said that very few studies have studied children over a long period of time. Also, no study so far has looked at the effect of body weight on alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition characterized by the sudden onset of hair loss in patches on the scalp or other areas of the body. The study emphasized the promotion of weight control and healthy diet to prevent atopic dermatitis, especially in obese preschool children.
