Children under 14 are now banned from using social media platforms in the state of Florida in the United States. On Monday (March 25), state Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law mandating that children ages 14 to 15 will also need parental consent to use social media. The move is to protect children from online threats to their mental health. Social media platforms must shut down all social media accounts that do not have parental consent.
Will become law on January 1, 2025
Let us tell you that this bill will become law on January 1, 2025. Small social media platforms will be closed. “Social media harms children in many ways, and this move will also help parents protect their children,” DeSantis said in a statement. Although the bill does not name any platform, it talks about social media platforms having features like metrics, autoplay videos, live streaming etc.
According to those who ban social media for children, Internet media exposes children to things that lead to depression, suicide, and drug addiction.
