Lucknow. Today, on the morning of Monday, 16 February 2026, the country’s oil marketing companies (OMCs) have released new prices of petrol and diesel. The ongoing fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international market and the position of the rupee against the dollar have a direct impact on our fuel prices. Although, oil prices have remained within a limited range in the Indian market for quite some time now, but due to the tax (VAT) of metros and states, the rates vary from city to city.

Come, let us know in the reporter style of Amar Ujala, how much burden of petrol and diesel is going to be on your pocket today.

Rates of major cities of UP-Bihar and other states

Prices vary across cities like Lucknow, Patna and Jaipur due to local taxes and freight charges:

Lucknow: Petrol ₹94.69 | Diesel ₹87.80

Patna: Petrol ₹105.58 | Diesel ₹93.80

Jaipur: Petrol ₹104.72 | Diesel ₹90.21

Bengaluru: Petrol ₹102.92 | Diesel ₹89.02

Chandigarh: Petrol ₹94.30 | Diesel ₹82.45

Indore: Petrol ₹106.48 | Diesel ₹91.88

Why are prices not changing? International market and tax game

Petrol and diesel prices in India have remained largely stable for the last two years. The main reason behind this is the reduction in excise duty by the Central Government and the oil companies themselves managing international fluctuations.

Effect of crude oil: India imports more than 80% of its oil needs. Currently, oil companies have got some relief with Brent crude slipping below $68 per barrel.

Dollar vs Rupee: Since oil is bought in dollars, the strengthening rupee could make the fuel cheaper.

VAT and Excise: Taxes alone constitute around 40-50% of the total price. This is the reason why oil is costlier in Rajasthan or Bihar than in UP.
