News India Live, Digital Desk: Politics has dissolved in the air of Bihar. It cannot be said when which issue will come to the fore here. Nowadays, there is a huge tug of war going on in the political corridors of Patna regarding the ‘identity’ of a society. matter influential in Bihar Bhumihar society Is connected to. A section of the society is demanding that instead of just writing ‘Bhumihar’ in front of their caste in the government records, ‘Bhumihar Brahmin’ Let it be written.

This demand may sound simple, but the story behind it and its consequences are very complex. The situation has reached such a stage that to resolve this issue State Commission for Upper Castes Also could not reach any conclusion and has put the ball in the government’s court.

After all, what is the issue?

In fact, a large section of the Bhumihar community believes that historically and socially they are Brahmins. He argues that his ancestors were ayachaka brahmins (non-worshippers), who held land and agriculture. Therefore, it is important to include the word ‘Brahmin’ in government documents to connect with our roots and get our true identity.

But the catch is that another section of the society and some experts believe that ‘Bhumihar’ is an independent and strong identity in itself, which does not need any other ‘tag’.

‘War’ broke out in the commission itself

Several meetings of the upper caste commission were held on this issue in the last few days. If sources are to be believed, the members of the commission could not reach a consensus among themselves.

  • Some members said that this is like correcting a historical mistake and it should be accepted.
  • At the same time, some members clearly said that changing the name of caste or adding a new word does not come under the jurisdiction of the Commission.

The debate escalated so much that no consensus could be reached. Ultimately, the Commission gave up and said that this was a “policy matter” which would be decided by the Government and the General Administration Department.

For Nitish Kumar “Well in front, ditch behind”

Now this entire matter has come to the table of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Considering the electoral environment of 2025, this decision is not going to be easy.

  • If the government says ‘yes’, will it not upset the traditional Brahmin community (Maithil or Kanyakubja)?
  • If she says ‘no’, then the Bhumihar community demanding its roots may consider it as ignoring it.

Bhumihar is a strong vote bank of Bihar and is considered the core voter of NDA. In such a situation, angering any party can be risky for the government.

Now what next?

At present, all eyes are on the Chief Minister’s residence. Will the government take any major decision on this sensitive issue or will it be put on hold? Whatever may be the case, this debate has once again heated up the politics of caste and identity in Bihar.
