New Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi will take charge on June 30

The world's fourth largest army has got a new chief. Joint Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will be the next Army Chief. Lieutenant General Dwivedi will take over from the current Army Chief General Manoj Pandey at noon on June 30. General Pandey was earlier scheduled to retire on May 31 but the government extended his tenure till June 30.

Lieutenant General Dwivedi, who hails from Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, did his early education at Sainik School, Rewa. Born on 1 July 1964 and an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lieutenant General Dwivedi joined the 18th Battalion of the Army's Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984.

He has held many important responsibilities in his career spanning nearly 40 years. Before becoming the Chief of Army Staff in the Army, Lieutenant General Dwivedi has been the head of the Northern Command of the Army. During the tenure of Northern Command from 2022-24, he played an important role in the ongoing talks with China on eastern Ladakh.

The job of the Army's Northern Command is to protect the border with China and India's border with Pakistan. It also plays an important role in anti-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The new Army Chief has great experience of working on the northern and western borders. He has experience fighting against terrorism. Lieutenant General Dwivedi has been involved in the modernization process of the army. He has also taken the initiative to include indigenous weapons in the army as a self-reliant India.
