Wout Weghorst's brilliant performance helped the Netherlands get off to a winning start to their Eurocup 2024 campaign. In their first match, the Netherlands performed brilliantly against Poland and defeated them 2-1.
The Polish team, playing without their highest goal scorer and leading striker Robert Lewandowski, scored the first goal of the match when Adam Buksa put the ball into the net in the 16th minute to give the team a 1-0 lead. Buksa became the first Polish player to score in the first half in a group stage match of the European Championship. Lewandowski had previously scored in the first half in the group stage of the 2012 European Championship.
However, the Polish team's excitement of taking the lead did not last long and 13 minutes after the Polish goal, Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands equalized the score for his team. This was Gakpo's tenth international goal. Nathan Ek intercepted a pass from Nikola Zalewski and the ball was with Gakpo who sent the ball into the net. The Netherlands team changed the team composition in the 81st minute of the match and called substitute Weghorst on the field who scored the second goal for his team and gave the Netherlands the victory.
