Kathmandu, July 11 (HS). Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who became the Prime Minister after increasing the distance between the two major political parties after the general election in Nepal, had received the support of the entire House for the first time. Before his departure on Friday, he has the support of less than a quarter of the MPs in his favour.
Prachanda, the leader of the third largest party with 32 seats, is set to leave the post of Prime Minister on Friday. When he won the trust vote after being elected Prime Minister for the first time, he got the support of 273 MPs in the 275-member House. Now that his government has come into minority and he is going to take the trust vote on Friday, he has the support of only 63 MPs left.
Prachanda, who always claimed to bring upheaval in Nepali politics, has himself become a victim of this upheaval. At one time, with 32 seats, he ran the government with 89 MPs of the largest party Nepali Congress, and then suddenly, he changed his mind overnight and ran the government with CPN-UML, the second largest party with 78 MPs. Prachanda openly used to say that he has the magical number of 32, which will keep changing. Prachanda claimed many times that the alliance will keep changing but he will remain the Prime Minister and will remain so for the entire five years, but this did not happen. Fed up with his bragging, the two largest parties of the country, despite having opposite ideologies, came together and are soon going to oust Prachanda and form a government with a two-thirds majority.
Apart from the CPN-UML, which was with Prachanda till now, the Janata Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, Janmat Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Nagrik Unmukti Party and Rashtriya Janamorcha all left the party. Apart from the main opposition party Nepali Congress, all these parties have decided to vote against the trust vote to be held on Friday.
So far, Prachanda has the support of 32 Maoist MPs, 21 National Independent Party MPs and 10 Unified Samajwadi Party MPs. However, there is a rumour in political circles that 5 out of 10 Unified Samajwadi Party MPs may cross the floor during the trust vote tomorrow. Two prominent MPs of this party, Prem Ale and Kisan Shrestha, have announced to vote against the Prachanda government.
