New Delhi/Lucknow: After the release of NEET UG 2026 result by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the race for admission in medical colleges has now started. The National Medical Council (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the academic session 2026-27 and it is expected that the counseling schedule will also be out in the next day or two. This time lakhs of students from UP and Bihar are going to participate in the counseling process, but there is a big difference in the seat matrix of both the states.
Uttar Pradesh: Second highest number of seats in the country, but no growth this year
Uttar Pradesh is a big hub of the country in terms of population as well as medical seats. After Karnataka, UP has the highest number of MBBS seats. According to the new report of NMC, there are a total of 88 government and private medical colleges in UP, in which a total of 14,000 seats are available. However, a slightly disappointing news for the students of UP is that not a single new seat has been increased in any medical college in the state this session.
Mathematics of government vs private colleges in UP
If we divide the medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh into categories, then the number of government colleges in the state is more but the seats are less as compared to private ones. There are a total of 49 government medical colleges in UP, where there are 5,700 MBBS seats. At the same time, a total of 8,300 seats are available in 39 private medical colleges of the state, where students will bid for admission.
Bihar: Good news for medical students, bumper increase in seats this year
On the other hand, this time there is news of great relief for the NEET qualifier students of Bihar. The total number of medical colleges in Bihar is 26, with a total of 4,160 seats. The special thing is that this year a bumper increase of 740 MBBS seats has been made in Bihar, which will make the path of becoming a doctor a little easier for the students of the state.

Of the total 26 colleges in Bihar, 12 are government medical colleges, with a total of 1,710 seats. This year 190 new seats have been added in government colleges of Bihar. At the same time, there are 14 private medical colleges in Bihar, in which there are a total of 2,450 seats and this year there has been an increase in seats in the private sector as well, due to which the total figure has reached 2,450 seats.
