NEET PG Counseling 2026: Counseling process begins for more than 58 thousand seats across the country

The biggest and most awaited news is coming for the post-graduation medical students across the country. The official process of NEET PG Counseling 2026 has been started by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC), under which the stake will be played for admission to a total of more than 58,000 MD, MS and Diploma seats available in various government, private, deemed universities and central institutions across the country. Like every year, this time too lakhs of young doctors from across the country are participating in this great battle, but the huge difference between the total number of seats and the total number of candidates is testifying that the competition is going to be very tough. The biggest and bitter truth is that out of more than 58 thousand seats available across the country, the number of seats in government medical colleges is limited, due to which the hope of every MBBS degree holder getting a government college may be dashed. Eligible candidates will have to do choice filling very wisely and strategically based on their rank and score, otherwise they may have to lose the specialization or college of their choice.

As per the detailed schedule released on the official portal of the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC), the process of registration, choice filling and seat allotment for NEET PG 2026 is being conducted in a phased manner. Eligible candidates are advised to keep all their necessary documents ready like MBBS degree, internship completion certificate, medical council registration and NEET PG scorecard before attending the first round of counselling. During registration, candidates have to fill the priority order of colleges and courses of their choice (Choice Filling) very carefully. Experts believe that this phase of counseling is most important for the career of the students, because a small mistake or choosing a wrong college can affect their hard work throughout the year. A total of four rounds of counseling (Round 1, Round 2, Mup-up Round and Stray Vacancy Round) will be conducted so that not a single seat is left vacant.

The biggest struggle in this entire journey of NEET PG is regarding the limited seats in government medical colleges. Every year lakhs of students in the country graduate after completing MBBS degree, but when it comes to PG specialization i.e. MD or MS, the seats under government quota are comparatively very less. This is the reason why a large part of the total seats of more than 58 thousand come under private and deemed universities, whose fees run into lakhs and crores of rupees. The first priority of most of the doctors coming from ordinary and middle class families is always government colleges, where high level medical training is available at low fees. The cut-off marks are skyrocketing and the competition in the general category as well as in the reserved categories has increased so much that even with a slight decrease in the score, the dream of getting a government seat remains unfulfilled, due to which students are forced to go to private colleges by paying huge fees or have to prepare for the exam again next year.

It is very important for all the prospective doctors who are going to participate in the counseling process that they should not just rely on hearsay but should carefully read each and every guideline given on the official website of MCC. While filling the choices, do analyze your score, All India Rank (AIR) and previous years’ cut-off trends. If your rank is a little behind, then widen your options by not relying only on select top government colleges so that you can get a safe and good seat till the final stages of counselling. Experts in the field of medical education also suggest that while choosing private colleges or deemed universities, get complete information about their affiliation, clinical patient load and fee structure. This counseling process will set the foundation for your future as a doctor and super-specialization, so take every step very carefully.
