The Indian government has taken a big decision, which will shock Maldives and China. The Narendra Modi government at the Center has decided to build a naval base on Agati and Minicoy islands of Lakshadweep. This will strengthen the position of the Indian Navy in Lakshadweep. It is noteworthy that relations between India and Maldives have been tense for the last few months. Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu has come closer to China after winning the elections, which has strained India-Maldives relations. Apart from this, the matter was recently heated up by the indecent comments of some Maldivian ministers on the pictures shared during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands lie on the 9 Degree Channel, through which billions of dollars of trade flows through South-East Asia and North Asia. Minicoy Island is only 524 km away from Maldives. A long way away, Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Minicoy on March 4-5 aboard the carrier task forces INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant to inaugurate Naval Base INS Jatayu with naval officers.
The Indian Navy is planning to hold the first phase of the Joint Commanders' Conference aboard an Indian aircraft carrier with two warships traveling from Karwar in Goa to Minicoy Island to Kochi. The second phase of the Commanders Conference will be held on 6-7 March. The Modi government has decided to upgrade the airstrip at Agati with plans to build a new airstrip at Minicoy and deploy naval personnel at INS Jatayu.
