Mumbai: Retired director of a multinational company involved in cyber fraud of Rs. There was a loss of Rs 25 crore

A Mumbai-based retired director of a multinational company (MNC) has suffered a loss of Rs 25 crore in cyber fraud. The cyber thugs posed as CBI and police officers and threatened them that they were being investigated in a money laundering case. According to Mumbai Police, this is the biggest cyber fraud in recent times targeting an individual in Mumbai. The victim had sold her and her mother's shares and mutual fund investments and also taken a gold loan to make payments to the cyber gangs. The cyber fraud occurred over a period of two months, starting from February 6 last.

A retired director of a multinational company living in an old suburb of Mumbai received a WhatsApp call and the caller introduced himself as a Department of Telecommunications official and told him that his three mobile numbers would be deactivated. When the victim senior citizen asked the reason, the caller said that he was connecting the call to a police officer. After this, another person started talking to him posing as a police officer and said that he was against the victim.

Complaint of money laundering has been received. The victim's mobile number and Aadhar card have been found linked to the case. The caller then transferred the call to another person, who introduced himself as a CBI officer and threatened to implicate the victim in a money laundering case and said, “If you want to get out of this case, I say Deposit the money in the bank.” account, the money will be returned to you.”

Ghatia also opened a current account in the name of the victim and asked him to deposit money in it. He told the victim that his money would be sent to the Reserve Bank. The victim was also asked to collect payment receipt from the local police station. The victim transferred around Rs 25 crore, but when he did not get the amount back, he lodged a police complaint against an unknown gang.
