Mumbai: A special MCOC court in Mumbai has acquitted Indian Mujahideen (IM)'s Aijaz Sheikh, who was sentenced to death for the February 2013 Hyderabad terror attack, in a 2010 case related to sending an email warning of a terror attack in New Delhi on behalf of a banned organisation.
Special MCOC judge BD Shelke acquitted Sheikh for lack of evidence. However, the detailed order and reason for exoneration will be made available later.
The cyber police have registered a case against an unknown person for sending an email claiming responsibility for the terror attack on Jama Masjid on September 19, 2010. Sheikh was accused of fraud for obtaining a SIM card in the name of Poorva Shinde and sending threatening mails.
The prosecution examined eight witnesses including the shopkeeper from where the SIM card was bought on a fake ID. The defence argued that the IP address mentioned in the FIR was from Norway. The prosecution could not prove that the mail was sent from Mumbai.
Sheikh was arrested in 2014 for his involvement in several attacks in India and was sentenced to death in connection with the Hyderabad terror attack. A case related to the July 13 Mumbai terror attack is also going on against him.
