Presidential elections are going to be held in America on November 5. The Democratic Party's candidate in the presidential election is Kamala Harris, while on the other hand, the Republican Party's candidate is Donald Trump. There is a rivalry going on between the two. These days the whole world's eyes are on the American elections. Meanwhile, Russian President Putin made a statement regarding the American elections, which angered America.
Why is America angry?
Russian President Putin said that he chooses Kamala Harris as President in the US election and supports her. After which America got angry. The White House has asked Putin not to interfere in the US election. The White House has urged Vladimir Putin 'not to talk' about the US presidential election.
The American people must decide
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that only the American people should decide who will be the next president of the United States. 'We would be very grateful if Mr. Putin would stop talking about our elections and stop interfering.'
What statement did Putin give?
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin said he was supporting Harris because she “gives such a clear and pleasing smile that it means everything is fine with her”. So my support is with her. Both Putin and the moderator were seen laughing after his statement. The audience applauded when he made this comment.
Serious allegations against Russia in 2016, 2020
US agencies claim that Putin ran a disinformation campaign to help Trump's campaign against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election. Russia has denied these allegations. Similar claims were also made during the 2020 presidential election, which Joe Biden won. However, earlier this month Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that there was no Russian disinformation and that the FBI and other agencies had forced the social media platform to censor the content.
Serious allegations against Russia in 2024 elections
The Biden administration on Wednesday accused Russia of making serious efforts to influence the US presidential election. President Joe Biden's administration has alleged that along with promoting misinformation, Russia may try to trap some influential Americans into disinformation through state media. The actions taken by the US government include sanctions against an official of state media organisation RT, which was forced to register as a foreign agent by the Justice Department, as well as visa restrictions.
Intelligence agencies have already made allegations
Intelligence agencies have previously accused Russia of spreading disinformation to interfere in the election. However, Attorney General Merrick Garland's expected announcement could be a sign of the US's deeper concern. A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. An official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said during a recent briefing, “Russia is trying to influence elections, including the (US) presidential election.”
