Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political wing, was assassinated in Iran on Wednesday morning. Iran's paramilitary force Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) confirmed the killing. Iran says Haniyeh was killed at his home in Tehran.
One of Hania's bodyguards also died in the attack. No country or spy agency has yet claimed responsibility for the murder in Iran. However, it is feared that the attack was carried out by Israeli spy agency Mossad. After the war between Israel and Hamas started in October last year, the Israeli government also warned of retaliation for the attack and elimination of those responsible. In particular, Israel has a long history of taking retribution for the murder of its own citizens, whether it is hunting down terrorists who killed Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics or killing prominent political and military faces of enemy countries in drone strikes – Israel has a long history of acting on enemies. And, its spy agency Mossad has been at the forefront of carrying out these missions.
Israel has a long history of taking revenge for the killing of its own citizens
1. 1972 Operation Wrath of God
The history of destroying enemies on the soil of enemy countries began after its independence. However, most of its attacks have been secret. Israel first openly announced the elimination of its enemies in the 1970s, when some Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes in Germany during the Munich Olympics. After this incident, the spy agency Mossad launched Operation Wrath of God to take revenge. Under this campaign, Israel tracked down and killed every member of the Black September organization behind the Munich attacks. The shocking thing is that meanwhile Israel was targeting a much larger and more dangerous military force than itself. This campaign of Mossad is still discussed all over the world.
2. Operation Thunderbolt of 1976
In 1976, a French plane was hijacked by Arab terrorists, carrying 94 Israeli citizens. Mossad freed the plane from Uganda. This operation was much talked about. In this operation, Yonatan Netanyahu, brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, died.
3. MiG-21 was brought to Israel
In the 1960s, the Soviet Union considered the MiG-29 to be Russia's most advanced aircraft. The US CIA also failed to acquire it. But a female agent of Mossad acquired the Russian MiG-29 in 1964. However, in this mission in 1962, a Mossad agent was caught, who was later killed.
4. Secret mission to Argentina in 1960
Mossad carried out a secret mission in Argentina in the 1960s to kidnap Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann and take him to Israel. He was tried and punished. The mission was carried out by five agents.
5. Assassinated an Iranian nuclear scientist
In November 2020, Brigadier General Mohsen Fakhrizahid, the chief scientist of Iran's military nuclear program, was assassinated. Although the Mossad did not take responsibility for the killing at the time, in June 2021 the head of the Mossad made an important revelation on the matter.
6. Other operations performed abroad
Mossad infiltrated Iran for the US and killed Al-Qaeda's second-in-command Al-Masri. After this, they entered Iran and killed terrorist Abu Mohammad. Khalil al-Bajir alias Abujihad, the right-hand man of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, was shot dead in Tunisia by a Mossad agent posing as a tourist and fired 70 bullets at his family. Mossad used deadly beauties to capture Vanunu, a renegade scientist who had leaked information about his own country's nuclear program and lured him back to Israel.
