More than 25 thousand Indians are feared to be trapped in the violence that started in Bangladesh over the demand for reservation. In this regard, the Ministry of External Affairs has assured the affected families and relatives that the Government of India is in constant touch with the Indians living in Bangladesh. So, about 8500 Indian students live in Bangladesh and more than 15 thousand Indians live there. Their families and relatives living in India are very worried after the violence broke out in the neighboring country over reservation. After the decision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government to give reservation in jobs to the sons and daughters of Bangladesh freedom fighters, anti-reservation protests started in the country. Thousands of youth and students took to the streets and started protesting against reservation. Soon the protest turned violent and went out of control. More than 100 people have lost their lives in the violence in the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson said- no need to worry, we are in constant touch
Regarding the safety of Indians living in Bangladesh, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press briefing on Saturday that protests are going on continuously in Bangladesh. Students of our country and thousands of Indian citizens live there. We have issued a travel advisory to our countrymen to stay in touch with the High Commission and provide them necessary assistance. The Foreign Minister himself is keeping an eye on the situation.
On the instructions of the Ministry, the High Commission is giving regular updates on the situation there. We will continue to provide regular updates and request all family members of Indian citizens living in Bangladesh to stay in touch. We are committed to providing all possible assistance to our citizens. He said that all our citizens are safe.
