The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a major ‘clean-up’ campaign to make the Aadhaar database secure and accurate. Under this campaign, more than 2.5 crore Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated so far. According to government data, this action has been taken mainly against those whose Aadhaar was likely to be misused or whose information was outdated.
Why are Aadhaar cards becoming inactive?
UIDAI has shut down Aadhaar after reviewing the Aadhaar database due to these main reasons:
Based on dead persons: Aadhaar numbers of more than 2.5 crore deceased persons have been removed from the database to prevent fraud and misappropriation of government schemes.
10 year old data: Those people who have not made any changes in their Aadhaar (photo, address or biometrics) in the last 10 years are facing crisis.
Incomplete information: Aadhars which had serious mistakes in name, date of birth or address or were found to be ‘duplicates’.
Mandatory Biometrics (MBU): Not getting the mandatory biometric update (MBU) done for children between 5 and 15 years of age is also a major reason for inactivity.
What will be the loss due to closure of Aadhaar?
If your Aadhaar becomes inactive, many of your essential services may stop immediately:
Banking and Subsidies: Bank account may be frozen and gas subsidy or pension money will be stopped.
Ration Service: Food grains available through PDS may stop being available.
Government Schemes: Installments of schemes like PM Kisan may get stuck.
KYC issues: Getting a new SIM card, linking PAN or taking a loan will become impossible.

How to check your Aadhaar status? (Step-by-Step)
Visit Website: UIDAI official website uidai.gov.in Go to.
Select My Aadhaar: Here in ‘Aadhaar Services’ section ‘Verify an Aadhaar Number’ Click on.
Fill details: Enter your 12 digit Aadhaar number and captcha code.
View Status: If your Aadhaar is activated, ‘Aadhaar Verification Completed’ and your age/gender will appear on the screen. If it is inactive, you will have to immediately go to the nearest Aadhaar center.
