Monsoon Update: Monsoon is likely to be normal in India this year. According to private weather forecasting agency Skymet, there is a possibility of 868.6 mm monsoon rainfall during the June to September period this year. According to estimates, the percentage of rainfall during monsoon this year is likely to be 96-104 percent. It is noteworthy that earlier in the forecast released on January 12, the agency had also said that the monsoon will be normal. According to Skymet estimates, there may be a slight delay in the start of the season. The reason behind this is said to be the change from El Nino to La Nina. Also, the distribution of rainfall throughout the season is likely to be varied and uneven.
Monsoon circulation will intensify due to La Nina
Regarding the country's monsoon, Skymet Managing Director Jatin Singh said that El Nino is rapidly turning into La Nina. The monsoon circulation intensifies in La Niña years. Additionally, the transition of Super El Nino to stronger La Nina creates historically better monsoon conditions. According to Skymet, the situation will be better in the second half of the season as compared to the first half. Adequate and good rains are expected in the southern, western and north-western areas of the country.
Chance of good rain in these states
There is a possibility of heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. However, less rainfall is expected over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal during July and August. Rainfall in north-eastern India is expected to be below normal at the beginning of monsoon. Let us tell you that in North India, there is a good number of farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Nearly half of the country's agricultural land is dependent on monsoon rains for irrigation, with no other means of irrigation. Crops like paddy, millet, sugarcane, cotton and soybean are grown in this region.
Heat wave will continue even during monsoon
Along with monsoon, there is also a possibility of heat wave in the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heat wave may last for 10 to 20 days in different parts of the country during August to June. Generally this period lasts for 4 to 8 days. Obviously people will have to face the heat during these days.
