The south-west monsoon has now become fully active and aggressive in almost all parts of the country. Continuous torrential rains have wreaked havoc on normal life in many states. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert of heavy to extremely heavy rains with thunderstorms in 23 states of the country including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Delhi-NCR today i.e. on July 8, 2026. In many states, the traffic system has come to a complete standstill due to waterlogging, rising water level of rivers and breakdown of main roads.

The most severe form of monsoon is being seen in Maharashtra. During the last 24 hours, two people have tragically died and several have been injured in various rain-related accidents.

Highest rainfall in Palghar: A record 203.3 mm rainfall has been recorded in Palghar district, after which the administration has ordered all schools and colleges to be closed as a precautionary measure. Apart from this, heavy rainfall has also been recorded in Thane (116.4 mm), Raigarh (108.7 mm), Mumbai suburbs (90.4 mm) and Pune (70.9 mm).

Danger of high tide in coastal areas: High tide alert has been issued for coastal districts including Mumbai, Thane and Sindhudurg. Due to bad weather, 10 fishermen who went to sea have died due to drifting.

Arvi island became isolated: Due to heavy rains in Pune and Ahilyanagar, Bhima river is flowing at full capacity. Due to this, ‘Arvi Island’ of Srigonda taluka is surrounded by flood water from all sides and its connection with the mainland has been completely cut off. The administration is using boats to help the villagers stranded there.

Jaltandav in Ujjain: After torrential rains in Ujjain, the water level of the holy Shipra river rose so rapidly that many small and ancient temples built at Ramghat were completely submerged in water.

Orange and Yellow Alert: The Meteorological Department has today issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Shivpuri, Sagar, Guna, Ashoknagar, Sheopur Kalan and Tikamgarh districts. Whereas in big cities like capital Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, Khandwa and Khargone, ‘Yellow Alert’ has been implemented and people have been instructed to stay away from rivers and drains.
Uttar Pradesh: Warning of torrential rain in more than 60 districts today
The pace of monsoon is very fast in Uttar Pradesh also. On Tuesday, heavy rain was recorded in about 50 cities including Lucknow, Varanasi and Moradabad. The roads in Shamli looked like rivers due to water logging, while the Delhi-Lucknow highway was submerged in Amroha.

Warning for today: The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in more than 60 districts of UP on Wednesday. These mainly include Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Aligarh, Mathura, Agra, Jhansi and Lalitpur. The Meteorological Department has also expressed serious fear of lightning along with thunder.
Effect of depression: There will be heavy rain in these states including Delhi, Punjab and Bihar
According to meteorologists, the strong low pressure area (depression) formed over Jharkhand and Odisha is gradually moving towards Madhya Pradesh. Due to this seasonal change, rainfall activities will intensify in the states of North and West India. There is a strong possibility of strong thunderstorm and heavy rain in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar and Chhattisgarh in the coming hours.
On the other hand, monsoon will also be kind in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh of Northeast India, while heavy rains are expected in Kerala and coastal Karnataka of South India. The administration has appealed to the citizens of all the affected states to follow weather related guidelines and avoid unnecessary travels.
