Mohammed Shami spoke on his return to Team India, gave a blunt answer to the speculations about Ranji break and 2027 ODI World Cup.

Mohammed Shami, one of the most experienced and lethal fast bowlers of the Indian cricket team, has spoken openly about his return to the national team, the importance of domestic cricket and his future plans. Despite being India’s most successful fast bowler in the history of ODI World Cup, Shami is currently out of the national team, but his courage and enthusiasm have not diminished even a bit. There was a lot of speculation about his not taking the field during the Ranji Trophy match played against Services in New Delhi. There were speculations in the media that he was injured. However, after the match, Shami put an end to all these rumors and clarified that he is completely fit and the decision to take a break was purely a strategic decision based on the pitch conditions and team combination.

When Mohammed Shami did not become a part of the playing eleven in the Ranji Trophy 2026 match played between Bengal and Services at Air Force Ground A in Palam, New Delhi, questions were being raised everywhere about his fitness. While talking to the reporters on the very first day of the match, Shami had made it clear that he was not suffering from any serious injury but was completely fit. On the third day of the match, when Bengal registered a spectacular victory by defeating Services by 60 runs, Shami revealed the real technical reason behind his decision not to play. He said that the Palam pitch completely suited the spinners and there was no special help available for the fast bowlers. In such circumstances, as a fast bowler, he does not prove to be very useful for the team. This strategic assessment of Shami proved to be completely correct, because Bengal’s spinners gave their team a resounding victory within three days by taking 19 wickets out of total 20 services in the match.

When asked about his return to the national team and contact with the selectors, Mohammed Shami gave a very candid answer without any hesitation. Shami clearly said that at present he is not a part of the central contract of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor is he associated with the main national team. In such a situation, there is no formal reason for the selectors to talk to him directly. Shami said, “When I am not in the team and I don’t have any central contract, then who will talk to me and why?” However, he also stressed that not having a contract does not make any difference to his dedication and hard work. He will continue to play with all his might for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and will continue to give his supreme contribution to bring victory to the state team.

While answering the questions regarding his international career, Mohammed Shami set an example of optimism. He said that as a player one should never give up hope. To move forward in any profession or sports field of life, it is essential to have a clear goal in front of you. Shami said, “Why should I lose hope? Hope should always be alive. My biggest and immediate goal right now is to play in the Ranji Trophy and make the Bengal team champion. There are always goals in life and as a professional player one has to sweat constantly to achieve them. I never back down from any of my goals.”

In the history of ICC ODI World Cup, the record of taking most wickets from India still remains in the name of Mohammed Shami. He has dismissed 55 batsmen in just 18 matches. His historic spell of taking 7 wickets (7/57) against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final is still fresh in the minds of cricket lovers. With less than a year left for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, when Shami was asked about his World Cup plans, he termed long-term speculations as completely meaningless. Shami said that he does not want to put mental pressure on himself by thinking so far ahead. No one knows what will happen with whom tomorrow, who will run and who will take wickets on the field. Shami clarified that currently his biggest priority is to improve his bowling skills and fitness by playing every domestic match. Focusing on the present instead of worrying about the future is what makes an athlete stronger.
