Dhaka, 14 October (HS). Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Mohammad Yunus, met UN Special Envoy Thomas Andrews at his Tejgaon office today and expressed concern over the human rights situation in Myanmar. He called on the United Nations to create safe areas for displaced people in Rakhine and find ways to support them.
According to the news of Dhaka Tribune, Prof. Yunus said this could be a good start to resolving the Rakhine crisis. This initiative could prevent thousands of new refugees from entering Bangladesh. On this occasion, Andrews praised the Chief Advisor for his three-point proposal on the Rohingya crisis.
According to the press wing of the Chief Adviser, he said that violence in Rakhine State has created a major crisis. There is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance for displaced and hungry people, including the Rohingya. The special envoy said at least 3.1 million people have been displaced in Myanmar.
