Modi became the third Prime Minister to contest elections from the same seat for the third time, the state has given the maximum number of PMs.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday filed his candidature from the Varanasi parliamentary seat for the third time, equaling independent India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Bharat Ratna Pandit Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Both former Prime Ministers contested the elections from their respective constituencies (same Lok Sabha) and won with huge votes. Now Narendra Modi has equaled him by contesting the post of Prime Minister for the third time from the same Lok Sabha seat.

Had the honor of becoming Prime Minister

Pandit Nehru was MP from Phulpur seat of Prayagraj district thrice in 1951-52, 1957 and 1962 and all three times he took command of the country as Prime Minister. Pandit Nehru had the honor of being the first Prime Minister of the country. Although Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been MP from Lucknow five times, but after becoming MP in 1996, 1998 and 1999, he had the honor of becoming Prime Minister.

Narendra Modi equated former Prime Ministers

Now Narendra Modi was elected MP of Varanasi in 2014 and 2019. Both times, governments with a strong majority were formed at the Center under his leadership. By filing his candidature from Varanasi again for the third time, Modi has equaled the two former Prime Ministers who had contested from the same Lok Sabha seat three consecutive times.

Nine out of 14 Prime Ministers are from UP

There have been 14 Prime Ministers in India's democratic history, nine of whom have come from Uttar Pradesh. This trend, which started from Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, has reached Narendra Modi. During this period, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Singh, Chandrashekhar, Atal Bihari Vajpayee reached the Parliament after winning elections from various constituencies of UP and the elected MPs chose him as their leader as Prime Minister.

Modi's tenure is nine years 350 days

Narendra Modi's two-term tenure as Prime Minister is nine years and 350 days. However, the record of serving as Prime Minister for the longest period is in the name of the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Nehru remained the Prime Minister of the country for 16 years and 286 days. While Indira Gandhi is at second place. He remained Prime Minister for 11 years and 59 days. Whereas Manmohan Singh remained the PM of the country for ten years and four days. He is at third place in terms of tenure.
