Mob sets police station on fire

Mumbai: Police have arrested the youth accused of raping and murdering a six-year-old girl in Jamter, Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Hundreds of angry people attacked the police station and vandalised, pelted stones and set it on fire, demanding the accused to be handed over.

14 policemen were injured in stone pelting. It is being told that the situation became tense due to the people getting violent and the police had to resort to lathicharge and aerial firing. It is learnt that strict police security has been put in place and dozens of suspects have been arrested. The injured policemen have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

On the night of June 11, a six-year-old girl was kidnapped, sexually abused and then killed in Chinchkheda in Jamner taluka. The accused fled. Jamner police registered a case and further investigation was underway. The accused youth was picked up by the police from Tapi river area in Bhusaval yesterday. Family members of the deceased girl, relatives and locals gathered in large numbers outside the police station last night after getting information about his arrest. They demanded that the accused be handed over to them. They wanted the accused to be punished.

People started protesting outside the police station. Meanwhile, they came to know that the police had taken the accused youth to a safe place. This enraged the crowd. They started pelting stones, vandalizing and setting fire to the police station.

People also attacked the police. At least 14 policemen including an inspector were injured in the stone pelting. Police used force to disperse the crowd. Senior police officers reached the spot as soon as they got information about the incident. Riot control team also reached there.

The police tried to convince the people but when they did not listen to the police, they finally had to resort to mild lathicharge and firing in the air. A heavy police force was deployed here to control the situation. The condition of the 14 injured policemen is improving. The police have registered a case and arrested ten attackers and started further investigation.
