New Delhi, August 31 (HS). Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) President Mirwaiz Ashraf will take charge of the board for the next three years.
According to a Cricbuzz report, a top ACB official confirmed the development on Friday on the request of anonymity. Ashraf, who was appointed as the ACB chairman in 2021, was expected to complete his term in August 2023.
“Due to his performance over the last three years, the Taliban government has extended the new term of Mirwaiz Ashraf as chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board for three more years,” the ACB official said.
He said, “See stability is the key to our success and we try to value it. In the last three years we have had a president, a CEO and a coach and we have changed our captain only once because we feel if we want to grow as a cricket nation then we need to focus on stability and not try to chop and change.”
It is learnt that Afghanistan's Grand Patriarch Mullah Muhammad Hassan (the country's Prime Minister) has decided to extend Ashraf's tenure as president for three more years.
Ashraf, who was initially appointed as the head of the board and later elected to continue his work, will run the board until December when elections will be held at the annual general meeting.
It is understood that Afghanistan's chief patrons are backing Ashraf for the post, for which he would face no resistance in the next elections due in December.
This election is expected to be held as per the ACB constitution and international standards, where the board members will elect the new chairman through a transparent voting process at the AGM.
