New Delhi, 6 December (Hindustan Reporter). The Delhi High Court has directed the Ministry of External Affairs to consider in the form of a report the demand for framing guidelines for the safety and interests of students going to study abroad. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru said that this is a policy issue but the Ministry of External Affairs should consider the demand of the petitioner.
The petition was filed by an NGO named Pravasi Legal Cell. On behalf of the petitioner, advocate Basil Jason had said in the petition that in the current process under the Immigration Act, students going abroad do not get any protection. This Act is focused on those going abroad for employment and Indian students are not getting any benefit from it. In such a situation, there is always a risk for Indian students going abroad for higher education.
It was said in the petition that Indian students going abroad are harassed a lot. Complaints of cheating are received from many students. They are cheated by agents and educational institutions. Students going abroad are made victims of fraud in everything from admission to course selection and residential facilities. In such a situation, there is a need to provide adequate security so that the students can get protection. In the petition, a demand was made to issue guidelines to amend the Immigration Act.
