– Water Resources Minister Hazarika promised to build a dam by installing geo tubes in the open section of Gangadhar river at Bakdokra in Assam-West Bengal border area.

Dhubri (Assam), August 11 (HS). Water Resources Minister Piyush Hazarika today visited several places on the banks of the Gangadhar river under the Golakganj Assembly constituency of Dhubri district by boat. During this, the minister inspected the embankment constructed by the Water Resources Department and took stock of the necessary flood prevention measures in an area of about one kilometer of the Assam-West Bengal border area.

The Water Resources Minister first started his journey by boat from Kaimari Kathaltali in the district to the upper reaches of the Gangadhar river and reached a place called Bhalarkhas.

A dam of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department at this place broke in 2022 and was causing floods in the surrounding areas. Last year, on the instructions of Minister Hazarika, the Water Resources Department took measures by repairing the broken part for the construction of the dam. Due to the construction of about one and a half kilometer long dam, about 1,900 hectares of agricultural land and about 90 thousand people in 40 villages have been freed from floods. During the minister's visit, the local people expressed satisfaction over the work done by the Water Resources Department.

Resuming his journey by boat from this place at Kaimari, the minister reached Bakdokra village along with former MLA Ashwani Roy Sarkar and other officials including the divisional chief engineer. The upper and lower part of the left side of the Gangadhar river flowing in Bakdokra area belongs to West Bengal, while about one kilometer of the river lies in Assam. Due to opening of this one kilometer long stretch of the river, many villages of Assam like Bakdokra, Garopara, Ghritinkuti etc. get flooded.

The Water Resources Minister visited the site today and reviewed the flood and erosion problems with the local people and departmental engineers. The minister assured the local people that the dam will be constructed in November-December by installing Geo Mega Bags and Geo Tubes in the area with the latest technology. The minister directed the departmental engineers to take necessary steps in this regard.
