Milk production in the country increased by 4 percent to a record 23.93 crore tonnes.

Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh has said in a statement that India’s milk production has increased by 4 percent to 239.3 million tonnes in the financial year 2023-24.
India, the world’s largest milk producer, produced 230.5 million tonnes of milk in 2022-23. On the occasion of National Milk Day celebrations, he said that due to increase in productivity, milk production in 2023-24 was 23.93 crore tonnes.

The birth anniversary of Verghese Kurien, the founder of the White Revolution, is celebrated as National Milk Day on 26 November. The government today released basic animal husbandry figures for 2024.

According to Singh, the amount of milk available per person has increased to 471 grams in 2023-24. In 2022-23 this quantity of milk was 459 grams.

The average growth of milk production in India is 6 percent while that of the rest of the world is 2 percent. Singh stressed the need to bring dairy farmers into the organized sector.

He said that bringing dairy farmers into the organized sector will boost milk production and increase their income and eliminate the role of middlemen. He also laid emphasis on export of dairy products.

Singh asked cattle farmers to get their animals vaccinated. The government is providing free vaccination to animals.
