News India Live, Digital Desk: US President Donald Trump has taken the toughest stance so far regarding Iran. Ahead of the second round of nuclear talks to be held in Geneva on Tuesday (17 February 2026), Trump has warned that if Iran does not take concrete steps at the deal table, it could face “very traumatic” consequences. With this threat, America has deployed its second aircraft carrier in the area.
Geneva talks: last chance or harbinger of war?
The aim of this ‘indirect talks’, started under the mediation of Oman, is to limit Iran’s nuclear program and stop the increasing conflict in the region.
US representative: Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are leading the talks.
Iran’s stance: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said they are ready for a “fair agreement” but “will not bow to threats.”
Israel’s demand and Trump’s support
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently met Trump at the White House. Israel clearly says that Iran should not have any capacity to enrich uranium. Trump has indicated that if diplomacy fails, he could support a ‘surgical strike’ by Israel on Iran’s nuclear sites.
Why is Israel scared?
Even though Trump is threatening Iran, there is concern within Israel that if the talks fail completely, Iran and its supported groups (Hezbollah, Hamas) could launch a major counterattack on Israel. Iran has already warned that any US or Israeli attack would be responded to with missile attacks on US targets across the region and Israel.
Trump’s ‘Phase-2’ plan
Donald Trump has said that he wants results within the next month. If no deal is reached, the US will implement ‘Phase Two’, which includes more stringent economic sanctions and possible military action. Trump even said that the best solution would be “regime change” in Iran.
Highlights of the event:
date: 17 February 2026, Geneva Summit.
Military Pressure: Presence of two American aircraft carriers in the area.
Disputed issue: Nuclear enrichment, ballistic missiles and support to regional groups.
