On the first day of the new week, the Indian stock market's major index Sensex closed down by just 12 points, while Nifty closed up by 31 points amid a highly volatile environment. However, the overall market remained in a limited range. Oil and gas stocks rose today on a weak dollar as fears of a US recession diminished, profit booking in the financial sector offset metal stocks and an unexpected tax cut on crude oil.

Today the volatility index fell 0.60 percent to 14.32 from Friday's 14.40. Out of the 14 sectoral indices on Nifty, 4 closed with a decline while 10 closed with a gain. Nifty Auto index fell 0.89 percent, Private Bank 0.48 percent, Bank 0.29 percent and Financial Services 0.23 percent. On the other hand, Nifty Metal index closed up 1.87 percent, Media 1.02 percent, PSU Bank 1.20 percent and Oil & Gas 1.52 percent.

The Sensex opened at a high of 244 points today, but after that the index continued to fluctuate throughout the day. The Sensex made an intra-day low of 80,724 and a high of 80,332. Thus, after a total fluctuation of 392 points throughout the day, the Sensex closed at 80,424 after a fall of just 12 points or 0.01 percent. On the other hand, the Nifty also opened 95 points higher and after making an intra-day high of 24,638 and a low of 24,522, ended the day at 24,572, up 31 points or 0.13 percent. Thus, a total fluctuation of 116 points was seen in the Nifty throughout the day.

Talking about the broader market, midcap and especially smallcap stocks performed better today. The BSE mid-cap index closed 251 points or 0.53 per cent higher at 47,645, as compared to a 0.01 per cent decline in the Sensex. On the other hand, the small-cap index closed 716 points or 1.33 per cent higher at 54,573. The mid-cap index witnessed some volatility during the day, but the small-cap index saw a consistent and stable rise.

The BSE SME IPO index ended the day higher at 1,01,534, up 1,106 points or 1.10 per cent.

Out of the total 4,165 stocks traded on BSE today, 2,710 gained, 1,316 declined while 139 stocks closed flat. 288 stocks reached a fifty-two week high today, while 34 stocks reached a fifty-two week low. Today, 5 stocks hit upper circuit and 2 stocks hit lower circuit. The market sentiments are quite positive today, the market capitalization of companies listed on BSE today rose to Rs. 454.39 lakh crore or $5.41 trillion. This figure is above Friday's Rs. 451.59 lakh crore level, an increase of Rs. 2.80 lakh crore is visible.

Out of the 30 stocks listed on the Sensex, 18 closed with gains while 12 closed with losses. Top gainers were Tata Steel up 2.94 per cent, TCS up 1.65 per cent, NTPC up 1.19 per cent, JSW Steel up 1.16 per cent and Asian Paints up 0.89 per cent. Top losers were M&M up 2.65 per cent, Indusind Bank up 1.30 per cent, Axis Bank up 1.20 per cent, Bharti Airtel up 1.01 per cent and Tata Motors down 1 per cent. Out of the 50 stocks listed on the Nifty, 31 stocks closed with gains while 19 closed with losses. Top Nifty gainers were Hindalco up 4 per cent, Shri Ram Finance up 3.47 per cent, BPCL up 3.32 per cent, Tata Steel up 3.06 per cent and LTI Mindtree up 2 per cent. Top losers were M&M, down 2.59 per cent, Bajaj Auto, down 1.17 per cent, IndusInd Bank, down 1.07 per cent, Axis Bank, down 1.02 per cent and SBI Life, down 0.96 per cent.

Rupee gains 7 paise to two-week high against dollar

The Indian rupee strengthened against the dollar today following the strength of Asian currencies. The rupee closed at 83.87 against the US dollar, while on Friday it closed at 83.94. The rupee reached a high of 83.85 intraday, which is the highest level since August 6.

FIIs net sell Rs. 2,667 crore

Today FIIA Indian Stock Market made net sales of Rs. 2,667 crores, while DII made net purchases of Rs. 1,802 crores. With this, the net sales figure of FIIA in the month of August increased to Rs. 1.55 crores. 31,643 crores, while the net borrowing figure by DII increased to Rs. 35,862 crores.
