US software giant Microsoft deployed thousands of engineers and experts to restart many of its services that were disrupted following a global outage.
The company said in its blog that a system update by its cybersecurity partner CrowdStrike caused a global outage and disrupted online services on computers and laptops around the world. Microsoft said that about 8.5 million devices were adversely affected worldwide due to its server downtime. After this, the company deployed thousands of engineers and experts to resume all its disrupted services and interact directly with customers. Due to the global outage, sales operations were affected in many places in India and airlines had to ground aircraft. Thousands of flights had to be canceled. The outage brought the whole world to a standstill and businesses and systems came to a standstill.
Massive impact on airlines
Airlines were widely affected due to the outage. Airports and airlines were shut down. Advisories had to be issued for tourists. Due to the shutdown of online check-in and boarding pass operations of IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Airlines, passengers had to write boarding passes by hand. The blue screen of death appeared on the screens of millions of users.
Interoperability with multiple cloud service providers
Microsoft said that it is working with other cloud service providers including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well as stakeholders to spread awareness about its impact in the industry and also communicate about CrowdStrike with customers. This problem has caused disruptions in the daily work of many professionals and individuals, but our focus is on providing technical guidance and support to customers so that the system can be brought online in a safe manner.
