Weather forecast for today (August 18): Heavy rains are continuing in many parts of the country including Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains at isolated places in Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra in the next five days.

Apart from this, light rain may occur at some places in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and Chandigarh. A low pressure area is forming over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas and it is slowly moving towards Bangladesh and the Gangetic region of West Bengal.

Heavy rains in east, central India next week
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a low pressure area has formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal, which is likely to intensify. Due to its effect, heavy rains are expected in eastern and central India during the next week.

Apart from this, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka during the next 2-3 days. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive light to moderate rains till August 20. Scattered to widespread rains are expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan.

Heavy rains and strong winds have been predicted in Kerala in the next five days. Due to this, an orange alert has been issued in four districts of the state. Many parts of Kerala received intermittent light rains on Friday. The water level in various rivers of the state including Manimala and Pamba has increased. An orange alert has been issued predicting heavy rains in Thanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur are likely to receive light to moderate rains and strong winds of up to 40 kmph. Officials have asked people living near rivers to be extra cautious and not to cross water bodies.
