New Delhi, 7 December (Hindustan Reporter). Lionel Messi was named Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player on Friday after a stellar season with Inter Miami.
Messi was given the award after his performances helped Miami score a record 74 points in the regular season, giving the club its first Supporters’ Shield.
“I would have liked to receive this award in a different situation, if I could have played the final on Saturday,” Messi said at the MVP ceremony. We had a big dream to become MLS champions this year. “It didn’t happen, but we will come back stronger to try again next year.”
The 37-year-old Argentinian finished the regular season with 36 goals (20 goals and 16 assists), the league’s leading scorer.
The award comes after an injury-plagued season for Messi, who has played just 19 matches this year.
“Congratulations, Leo,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. On behalf of our entire league, our entire country and everyone who loves sports here and around the world, we are honored to have you in our league. “For the best player in the world to become the best player in Major League Soccer is a dream for all of us.”
Messi and his Inter Miami could not continue the winning streak in the MLS Cup playoffs and were eliminated in the first round against Atlanta United.
Messi is the 10th South American player and the fifth Argentine player to win the MVP award, after Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Christian Gómez.
