‘Mentor Project’ implemented to control habitual offenders resulted in 22 percent reduction in property crimes

Ahmedabad News: Generally, accused caught in crimes against property like vehicle theft, mobile theft, burglary, dacoity etc often commit the crime with the same modus operandi. ‘Mentor Project’ was launched across Gujarat by State Police Chief Shri Vikas Sahay to monitor accused caught in vehicle theft, mobile theft, burglary, dacoity and crimes against property under Narcotics NDPS Act.

The result of which is that compared to the year 2023, there has been a decrease of about 22 percent in property related crimes in the state this year. By expanding the scope of this project to the entire state, daily monitoring of 6500 regular accused, “one accused versus one police boss” has been directed by the state police chief Mr. Vikas Sahay.

Anti-property and narcotics criminals have a mentality of committing the same type of crime again and continuing such criminal activity. Mentor Project has been implemented by Gujarat Police to prevent the accused caught in such anti-property and narcotics crimes from continuing their criminal activities.

Under which accused arrested in two or more crimes against property and one or more drug offenses (NDPS) in the last five years have been included in this project. The accused have been listed.

The police station of the area where the accused listed under this project reside has been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing this advisory project by the State Police Chief. In which a police officer of the local police station has been appointed the guardian of an accused.

A police officer appointed as a protector has three main responsibilities. To ensure that the accused assigned to the guardianship do not commit any crime again, maintain necessary surveillance and know their location using technology at least three times a day. Complete dossier of the accused is ready. To make efforts to involve these accused in positive activities by leaving the path of crime.
