Mega-network of expressways in UP: Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal Expressways will be directly connected, Jewar-Jhansi link will also be given green signal.

Yogi Adityanath cabinet has taken a historic decision towards establishing Uttar Pradesh as the state with the most modern expressway network in the country. In the cabinet meeting held at Lok Bhavan under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, approval has been given for the selection and construction of developers of 4 new link expressway projects to create a huge ‘Expressway Mahagrid’ by connecting different expressways of the state. On these four projects to be developed on EPC mode by Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), approximately ₹17,542.06 crore Will cost Rs. With this historic decision, the distance between Paschimanchal, Bundelkhand, Madhyanchal and Purvanchal will be reduced and the entire state will be connected with high-speed connectivity without any interruption.

The most important project of this entire package is the Link Expressway directly connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the Purvanchal Expressway.

  • Length and Cost: This 6-lane greenfield corridor covers approximately 51 kilometers will be long, at which close ₹4,776 crore Will be spent. It can be expanded to 8-lanes in the future.

  • Direct Benefit: Till now, heavy vehicles and passengers going from Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi or Agra to Purvanchal (Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Bihar border) had to pass through Lucknow city, causing huge traffic jams in the areas of Shaheed Path, Sultanpur Road and Mohanlalganj. After the construction of this 51 km link expressway, vehicles will be able to bypass directly and run at a speed of 120 km/hour. With this, it will be possible to travel directly from Agra to Bihar border without any hindrance.

Jewar Link Expressway has been passed to connect the largest aviation hub of Western Uttar Pradesh with the eastern end of the state.

  • Length and Route: About 74 kilometers This long project will directly connect Noida International Airport (Jewar) with Yamuna Expressway and Ganga Expressway via Bulandshahr.

  • Lifesaver for logistics and cargo: As soon as this link is ready, air cargo of Jewar Airport and industrial goods of Western UP will be able to reach Prayagraj, Varanasi and Purvanchal directly through Ganga Expressway in very short time and low cost. This will drastically reduce the logistics cost.

To connect the development of Bundelkhand with the mainstream, the final approval of the Cabinet has been given on the construction of Jhansi Link Expressway.

  • Length and Connectivity: About 115 kilometers This long expressway will directly connect Jhansi city to Bundelkhand Expressway.

  • Benefits to defense and tourism: With the creation of this link, defense companies investing in Jhansi node of Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor will get easy connectivity. Also, it will be very easy to reach international tourist places like the historical fort of Jhansi and Orchha located on the border of Madhya Pradesh from Delhi and Lucknow.

The biggest project of ₹7,489 crore has been approved to make Farrukhabad, famous for potatoes and handicrafts, a part of the expressway grid.

  • Length and Route: About 91 kilometers This long 6-lane greenfield corridor will start from Agra-Lucknow Expressway (Signage 133) near Etawah. It will be reached on the under construction Ganga Expressway (signage 282) near Hardoi via Farrukhabad.

  • Boon to Awadh and Rohilkhand: Through this link, the areas of Kannauj, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Hardoi and Shahjahanpur will be directly connected to the capital Lucknow and Meerut from both sides with high-speed lanes.

As per the decision of the Cabinet, all these four link expressways will be constructed completely on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) method.

  • Deadline: The government has approved all these projects 3 years (36 months) A strict target has been set to be completed within. There is a plan to complete the Farrukhabad link on priority basis and at a faster pace.

  • Maintenance Guarantee for 5 years: Under the terms of the tender, whichever agency will build the road, the entire responsibility for its maintenance (maintenance and repair) for the next 5 years after the construction of the road will also be of the same developer.

  • 100% expenditure of the state government: The entire cost of ₹17,542 crore will be borne by the Uttar Pradesh government from its own resources and the central government has no direct financial stake in it.

Apart from giving unprecedented speed to road connectivity, these four projects will bring economic and employment revolution on a large scale in Uttar Pradesh. According to UPEDA’s assessment, the construction and material supply activities of these four link expressways will generate direct and indirect revenue of approx. 760 lakh (7.6 crore) man days Employment will be created. Heavy machinery, transportation, local construction material, ballast, mooring and cement industries will get huge demand. Development of logistics parks, food processing units, warehousing and new townships on both sides of the expressway will provide huge livelihood opportunities to the youth of rural areas in their home district. With the connection of all four expressways, Uttar Pradesh will become the first state in the country where the journey from one corner to the other can be completed in just 6 to 8 hours without any traffic interruption.
