Kolkata, August 31 (HS). A long meeting was held between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday to handle the situation arising out of the RG Kar Hospital incidents. According to party sources, the issues on which there was disagreement between the two can be decided soon at the political and administrative level. Some important changes are also expected in this context.
In recent times, amid political turmoil in the Trinamool Congress and the outrage in civil society over the incidents of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, Abhishek Banerjee's 'inaction' had increased discontent within the party. He had expressed displeasure over some 'wrong' steps of the police and administration from the very beginning. During this time, a section of the party had also started questioning his role, due to which many discussions started emerging within the Trinamool. A section of the party believed that Abhishek's role as the organizational head was making the situation more adverse.
In such a situation, Mamata and Abhishek suddenly sat down for a meeting in Kalighat on Friday evening. According to a party leader, “This discussion has given positive signals for both the party and the administration.” In this meeting, Abhishek clearly shared his views on the overall political situation with the Trinamool chief. At the same time, Mamata also informed him about the immediate tasks.
After the violent incidents at RG Kar Hospital on August 14, Abhishek had demanded police intervention and impartial arrests. After this, he also expressed displeasure over various steps taken by the administration regarding the murder and rape of the doctor. During this time, like the previous few occasions, this time too Abhishek kept himself away from these incidents. He was also sent messages several times by the party leadership regarding his 'inaction'.
According to party sources, after the events at RG Kar Hospital, the Chief Minister also had a long discussion with Prateek Jain, the head of the party's advisory body. After this, the foundation of the Mamata-Abhishek meeting was laid. After this meeting, Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh also reached the Chief Minister, who was called in a case related to RG Kar.
After this meeting, it will be interesting to see how Trinamool Congress resolves its internal differences and what changes it makes in the upcoming political strategy.
