The task force constituted for the mental health and well-being of medical students has submitted its report to the National Medical Commission (NMC). According to the report, depression, anxiety and stress are having a very bad effect on medical students. The task force has made several major recommendations to deal with these.

What has been said in these suggestions-

  • a weekly holiday
  • 10 hours duty for five days
  • 10 days leave to meet family
  • resumption of supplementary exams

Important recommendations of the task force for medical students

  • Duty hours should not exceed 74 hours per week.
  • There should be a 24-hour shift for one day and a 10-hour shift for five days.
  • There should be no shortage of hostel facilities.
  • E-complaint portal should be started to solve the problems.
  • There should be counselling service in every medical college.

The study says that to get admission in a medical college in India, one has to pass a very tough competitive exam (NEET). After that, issues like becoming a good doctor, burden of family expectations, hostel, exams, fear of ragging dominate the students.

The National Medical Commission will consider the recommendations given by the task force. After that, some major decisions can be expected to be taken by the NMC. If the recommendations of the task force are implemented, it will be a big relief for medical students pursuing courses like MBBS, BDS, MD, MS. Information about any decision of NMC in this regard will be made available to you on the official website of the commission nmc.org.
