Lucknow/Gurugram. The prestigious Medanta Hospital located in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh and Gurugram in Delhi-NCR, has once again come under serious controversies. A very sensitive case of gross negligence (medical negligence) in the treatment of a suffering patient and alleged financial extortion by the hospital management has come to light. The victim’s side alleges that the doctors showed gross negligence during the treatment and performed the surgery about 6 cm away from the actual wound area. Due to this wrong operation, pus is continuously flowing from the patient’s wound and his condition remains critical. Taking cognizance of this matter, the Honorable Chief Minister has taken a strict stand against the arbitrariness of doctors and has issued orders for a high-level inquiry.
Wound somewhere else, operation somewhere else: Doctors accused of negligence
According to information shared by the patient’s family members, when the doctors at Medanta were shown the continuous flow of pus from the affected area, they completely ignored it and kept postponing it saying ‘to see later’. When the victim’s family made a written complaint about this serious negligence through mail to the top officials and top management of Gurugram and Lucknow, they fell on deaf ears for a long time. After a lot of pressure, the hospital administration called a board meeting, in which instead of accepting their technical mistake, the doctors started flaunting their position and influence in front of the attendants.
Game of bullying and billing to leave government job and join private sector
During the board meeting, Medanta’s senior doctor Amit Aggarwal reportedly argued that he had come here after leaving his 5-year government job at PGI. At the same time, Dr. Uma Pradhan also cited leaving the prestigious job of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML). The question of the victim side is that if the doctors have come here only for treatment, then why are they manipulating the files to hide their shortcomings and continuously making bills? Family members allege that the hospital management gives a target of a certain financial amount to the doctors every month, to fulfill which the patients are being made scapegoats. Doctors have prescribed expensive dressings for this disease for one and a half to two years, the huge budget of which is completely beyond the reach of a middle class or poor family.
Chief Minister’s investigation order and second opinion exposed
After this matter gained prominence, Medanta’s Medical Director Dr. Rakesh Kapoor had advised the victim’s family to get a second opinion from some other outside doctor. After this, when the family consulted other expert surgeons, the doctors made it clear that the treatment was completely wrong. According to medical rules, treatment should have taken place at the site of the wound and not away from it. External doctors have stated the need to re-operate this wrong surgery to save the patient’s life. On the basis of this attitude of the hospital and solid evidence, the Honorable Chief Minister has given strict instructions for investigation, due to which now milk is expected to be milk and water is water.
