Kathmandu, 27 September (HS). The Mayor of Dhorpatan Municipality, who was absconding from Nepal after committing fraud, has been arrested from Paharganj area of New Delhi. Interpol had issued a red notice on the request of Nepal Police in the cooperative fraud case, after which it was successful in arresting him. Necessary legal process is being adopted to bring him to Nepal. Rai claimed that the mayor can be brought to Nepal by Monday or Tuesday after all the legal processes are completed.
Nepal Police's AIG Tech Bahadur Rai said that Dhorpatan Municipality Mayor Dev Kumar was absconding from Nepal on charges of irregularities in the funds of the cooperative society. Therefore, Interpol had issued a red notice after asking for help. According to AIG Rai, the Interpol branch of Delhi Police has sent a letter to Nepal Police on Friday informing about the arrest of Dev Kumar. Necessary legal process is being adopted to bring him to Nepal. Rai claimed that the mayor can be brought to Nepal by Monday or Tuesday after all the legal processes are completed.
Dhorpatan Municipality Mayor Dev Kumar Nepali is accused of embezzling Rs 138 crore from the Image Cooperative Savings and Loan institution headed by him. According to AIG Rai, so far more than 1500 people have filed FIR against the arrested mayor. After investigation in this case, the police named seven people including the Mayor and his wife as accused and filed a charge sheet against all of them in the Baglung District Court.
As soon as the matter came to light in April, 2024, Mayor Dev Kumar Nepali and his wife Chhela Nepali broke the lock of the door of their cooperative society at 2 am on April 18 and took the files, computer hard disk and deposited it in the bank the next day. They had absconded the next morning with around Rs 1.5 crore in cash kept for the purpose. All this scene is captured in the CCTV footage installed in the office of the cooperative organization. After irregularities were found in the investigation, the police detained and interrogated six employees working in the cooperative institution. All the seven members of the steering committee of this cooperative institution are said to be absconding since that time.
